MINNEAPOLIS Derek Jeter was a huge hit from the very start in his final All Star game. Batting leadoff for the American League, the 40 year old shortstop for the New York Yankees soaked in an ovation that lasted more than a minute at Target Field, then seized the moment Tuesday night by hitting a double. Jeter soon crossed the plate for the game's first run. After three innings of action, he was ceremonially removed from his familiar position in the field to one more round of revering cheers as his mom, dad, sister and nephew watched from the stands. "It's been fun family time for us," Jeter said during the American League's 5 3 win. The double was one of Jeter's classic, opposite field line drives to right. He singled to right field in his next at bat, too, raising his All Star batting average to a robust .481 13 hits in 27 at bats. That's the second best of all time for players with 20 or more at bats, behind Charlie Gehringer. OK, so maybe NL starter Adam Wainwright admitted he threw something juicy for Jeter to hit. "I was going to give him a couple pipe shots," the right hander said. "He deserved it." Wainwright later said that he didn't want to take away from Jeter's first inning hit. "It was mis said," the pitcher said in a television interview. "I hope people realize I'm not intentionally giving up hits out there." Jeter showed off in the field, too. In the top of the first, he made a slick, diving stop on Andrew McCutchen's sharp groundball up the middle. Jeter got to his feet and fired an on target throw to first base, but the fleet footed McCutchen was too fast, beating it out for a leadoff single. McCutchen smiled and pointed at Jeter, who grinned back at the reigning NL MVP. The Yankees captain also had a few words for his teammates. AL manager John Farrell of Boston asked Jeter to speak to the players in the clubhouse before the game. "Just said a couple things," Jeter said. This was the 14th time Jeter was picked as an All Star. He's set to retire after this season. When Jeter stepped to the plate, the crowd gave him a 63 second ovation, prompting him to wave, nod and tip his helmet several times. Wainwright, who spoke the day before about how proud he would be to pitch to Jeter on this memorable occasion, backed up toward second base and left his glove on the mound so he could clap along with everyone else at the ballpark. "For him to do that meant a lot to me," Jeter said. With a wide smile, Jeter shouted a few words toward the St. Louis ace, good naturedly encouraging him to get the inning going. "Just saying, 'Dude, I'm not going anywhere until this ovation is starting to die down,'" Wainwright said. "So he was telling me to go, and I just thought he deserved it." Fittingly, a recording of late Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard's famous monotone introduction was played as he walked up for his at bat with thousands of smartphones snapping away in the seats: "Now batting, for the American League, from the New York Yankees, the shortstop, No. 2, Derek Jeter, No. 2." The tribute came right after a national television audience tuned to Fox saw a Nike commercial that featured the likes of Michael Jordan, Jay Z and Rudolph Giuliani paying their respects to the captain. Right after that, he connected on the second pitch from Wainwright. "I didn't know he was going to hit a double, or I would have changed my mind on that," Wainwright said. "I thought he was going to hit something hard to the right side for a single or an out. I probably should have pitched him a little bit better." In the third, Jeter took Cincinnati ace Alfredo Simon to a full count before his single. Then, right before the fourth inning began, Jeter was taken out for Alexei Ramirez and the captain jogged off. With Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" playing on the stadium speakers, he waved to the crowd and exchanged hugs and handshakes in the AL dugout and then took a curtain call before the game resumed. Earlier in the day, Jeter was the first player to ride down the red carpet that was rolled out for downtown parade of the game's greats, from their hotel to the ballpark about 10 blocks away. The hearty ovations started there, while Jeter rode with his parents and other family members, who came to Minneapolis for the event. "I think everyone WANTS it to sink in that this is my last," Jeter said in the clubhouse before batting practice, "but I'm just trying to enjoy it while I'm here and stop thinking about this is the last one." Commissioner Bud Selig said Major League Baseball has been discussing ways to formally honor Jeter as he enters the final few months of his career. "If you were sitting two decades ago and you said, 'Boy, this is a guy I want to be the face of baseball and be what this generation will remember,' you couldn't have written a script like this," Selig said. "He is just remarkable." Men Nike Free Run 2 Anthracite Grey White Black Yellow Williams to pilot Vikings defense The Vikings' defensive coaching realignment highlights coach Leslie Frazier's desire to uphold a defense he helped build. Frazier is keeping the principles of the Tampa 2 defense. He's bringing in his own pupil in new coordinator Alan Williams, who worked with Frazier in Indianapolis from 2005 06, and his grip on the defensive outlook will be firm this offseason. Before Frazier got the head coaching job in January 2011, he led a defense that stopped the run and limited mistakes in the defensive backfield. He saw both areas suffer greatly in 2012, and he sounds fed up. Frazier was non committal Thursday when asked whether he would relinquish all defensive play calling duties to Williams. "I just know that in 2012, as we were putting this together, I really want to be involved in what we're doing and how we're playing things," Frazier, the Vikings' defensive coordinator from 2007 10, said on a conference call. "I really want to make sure we're headed in the right direction. Having the offseason will help in that way." The Vikings announced the hiring of Williams and defensive line coach Brendan Daly, while Frazier confirmed that former coordinator Fred Pagac has accepted the demotion to linebackers coach. Pagac will share those duties with special assistant to the head coach Mike Singletary. Entering his second season, he said he can't focus solely on the defense. That's why he hired Williams, who on Thursday disputed the notion that the Vikings need a defensive overhaul after finishing 30th in the NFL in points allowed and 26th in pass defense in 2011. The Vikings explored potential schematic changes but opted to keep their core intact because Frazier said they "didn't want to get too far away from the things that have helped us to be successful." That includes four straight seasons of top two run defense from 2006 09. "Sometimes the perception is, when the team doesn't perform more than the media thinks they should, then it should be blown up and there should be wholesale changes," Williams said on the conference call. "I don't believe that. A lot of times it's a tackle here, an assignment there that helps you be more successful." Williams, who agreed to a two year contract after 10 years with Indianapolis, was still under contract with the Colts when Frazier approached him about the job. Frazier hinted that Williams had other coaching opportunities elsewhere, but Williams downplayed the topic. An extensive 2 1/2 week coordinator search included interviews with former Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris, Jacksonville defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and a request to speak with Chicago defensive backs coach Jon Hoke. In the end, familiarity with Frazier was appealing to Williams, who said the Vikings will be detail oriented and fundamentally sound. "We're very familiar with one another's philosophy in terms of defense, our terminology," Williams said. "The way we coach is very similar. I only can see that as a positive, that Les will be hands on with the defense. He brings a wealth of experience, a wealth of knowledge, and he's very easy to work with." Both Williams and Frazier would like to see improvement in the secondary after their respective backfields tied for the league low with eight interceptions. Indianapolis finished second in pass defense in 2007, Williams' first full year as defensive backs coach, but fell to 15th in 2011 as the Colts limped to a 2 14 finish. Frazier said Williams communicates with players well and maximizes their potential, which will be crucial for a team that could add several defensive players through the draft or free agency. "We are an evolving football team," Frazier said. Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolo about football but not about working with the Vikings. "Things really worked out the way they should have," Frazier said. "Alan's going to be a great fit for what we're trying to get done going forward." Williams and Frazier don't anticipate any problems working with two linebackers coaches, including one that was asked to embrace a demotion after one year as coordinator. A rash of injuries in the secondary thwarted Pagac's plans to run a blitz heavy, man coverage scheme, and Frazier started taking over some of the playcalling duties in November. "Fred is an outstanding coach, an excellent linebackers coach, and I just feel that (because) he was willing to accept this role along with Mike Singletary two guys who I have a great deal of respect for as coaches in their respective roles and the fact that they're going to both be working with our linebackers I think we're going to have the best linebacking corps in the National Football League," Frazier said. Added Williams: "For anyone who was not interested in winning, that may be a problem. But I assure you that 'Pug' wants to win. It's first, foremost, above egos." Daly also has experience working with Frazier after assisting with the Vikings' defensive line from 2006 08 before taking over the Rams' line. Frazier praised Daly for his energy and sound teaching while wishing Dunbar well. "Karl did a great job for us for a number of years here, working with our defensive line and I wish him nothing but the best," Frazier said. "I have the utmost respect for Karl Dunbar."
