September 1, 2011 The North Liberty Steering Committee of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce presents the 8th annual North Liberty Fun Run/Walk, to be held on Sunday, September 18. Sponsored by MidWestOne Bank, the event features a 5k route and children s race. The race starts at 650 W. Cherry Street, near the gazebo at Liberty Centre. New for the 2011 Run is the competition for the Fast Feet Firefighting Trophy, as well as the Most Fun Costume contest. The North Liberty Fire Department has issued a friendly challenge to surrounding fire departments to participate in the Fun Run in full firefighting gear. Firefighters who do so race free. Participants are encouraged to get creative with their race day gear for a chance to win a prize for the Most Fun Costume. The fire department will also bring out the bounce house! Each year, the Iowa City Area Chamber s North Liberty Steering Committee donates back to the North Liberty community through a worthy organization. This year the Committee will be supporting the North Liberty Fire Department. As in past years, the Committee will also award $100 to the North Liberty school that recruits the most participants. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest male and female runners. Pre registration is $10 per person by September 9 and $15 day of registration. Children under the age of 12 race for free, but if the runner would like a T shirt, it must be purchased for $5. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. While steel shafts are formed as a whole, graphite shafts are composites of layers of carbon fiber. Because of the layered structure, engineers can arrange the entire composite in a great variety of ways, adjusting the flexibility of the club at various points along the shaft. For a golfer with especially slow swing speed, for example, a graphite shaft can be designed with extra flexibility at the bottom of the shaft, near the clubhead, to help spring it through the hitting zone. The last advantage of graphite shafts is they were originally designed for drivers and fairway woods, which means two things: first, that they are used for the first shots a golfer hits on a given hole, providing a head start of sorts; and second, they are used on almost every hole. For shorter clubs, especially short irons and wedges, steel is actually preferable because of the stability from the extra weight. It is basically an anti fungal agent, made from petroleum, which can help a product such as a shampoo, face cream or body lotion to stop developing bacteria or fungi from ruining them. Simply because they can readily absorbed by the skin, the largest organ in our bodies and then get into the bloodstream. They are not so easily excreted from the body either. What are the diseases that have a paraben link? There are a whole range of diseases and conditions which have been linked to these agents, from breast cancer to liver disorders and leukemia, depression and schizophrenia. Any skin product can be absorbed into the skin and because they mimic oestrogen, then they should be avoided where possible. What is paraben doing to our bodies? There is no conclusive evidence as yet but it is always better to opt for paraben free products where possible. Is there a limit established for cosmetic products? Parabens are allowed but there is a limit. This limit is about 3.8 grams for your typical cosmetic product. If we were to use the product, such as a body cream and rub it into the skin for a long period, then there would obviously be a risk. We should bear in mind that cosmetic companies are subject to little or no control by the FDA and are therefore for the most part self regulating.

Photos: Jeff Miller When Julie Dawson starts making farm visits, she may face a problem many of her fellow UW Madison agricultural extension specialists don't: battling city traffic and finding a place to park. "Much of my work will focus on farmers who are marketing directly to consumers, and they often have farms in or around urban areas," says Dawson, a new urban and regional food systems specialist who joined the university as an assistant professor and extension specialist in the Department of Horticulture this past July. Dawson, the first UW Madison plant scientist hired to specialize in urban and peri urban agriculture, will focus on the needs of Wisconsin's small, diversified, direct to market farms including those located in and around urban areas that sell their produce at local farmers markets, restaurants and grocery stores, and through Community Supported Agriculture shares. Her program will also support the state's community gardens, particularly those in urban areas where residents have limited access to good quality, fresh produce. Her work, in both cases, will take into account the whole food system including growing, processing, storing, distributing, transporting and selling as appropriate and needed. And much is needed. Local agriculture has seen a lot of growth over the past decade, with local food sales soaring from an estimated $1 billion in 2005 to nearly $7 billion last year. Likewise, the number of farmers' markets across the country has grown from 5,000 in 2008 to around 8,000 in 2013. Yet there are relatively few resources available to farmers in this agricultural segment at the UW. "UW Extension gets a lot of calls from people interested in starting small farms or have questions about small farm management, and there aren't as many on campus resources for this group," she says. "I'm hoping I can help meet this need." Dawson came here from Cornell University, where she helped develop small grain varieties for organic farming systems. It's a bit of a switch, but she thinks her background will translate well to her new assignment. "My previous research was with the same type of farmers that I'll be working with here. They are all interested in value added, organic, small scale production," she says. "And the participatory research I was involved in where I worked directly with farmers to develop and answer research questions is applicable to any crop." Come spring, Dawson plans to run variety trials to start identifying the best tasting, highest quality produce that can be grown on the state's urban farms. "The goal is to add value to farmers' products, either through growing better varieties or by differentiating by quality, so they bring a higher return," she explains. "Growers do a lot of experimenting. I want to work with them to help design research projects and implement them in a way that gives them reliable results that they can trust." Julie Dawson She also wants to help farmers and community gardeners set up their own trials to assess which farming practices work best for them, and she plans to develop an online portal where farmers can share their results. H. King Students for Sustainable Agriculture. Horticulture Professor and Chair Irwin Goldman thinks Dawson will be a great fit. "Our department feels Julie will bring absolutely top notch science to the tremendous challenge of urban food systems," he says. "We also feel that she will be an outstanding team member exactly the kind of person we need to advance our efforts in this area." When we were given the braces we also received a pair of shoes. The problem with "regular" shoes is that we cannot find them wide enough to fit over the braces. They have defintely helped. DD has them because of extremely low tone. She also has very loose joints. The braces help her ankles stay and her flat. At first we wore them only for an hour or so at a time. He has very loose joints. have had them a little under a year. At first we wore them a little bit at a time, we increased the amount of time he wore them each day. Peyton had no trouble adjusting to the AFOs. I buy his shoes at stride rite a size bigger than his regular shoes and wider. I sometimes have to pull the cushion out of the shoe to help them fit a little better. have wide and extra wide which is wonderful. You want to buy the shoe just big enough for the brace to fit in. Make sure you bring them when you go shoe shopping!!!! good luck The twins were 18 months old when they got their AFO's. They h a t e d hem. They only wear them in the daytime, and it took a good 2 3 weeks before they would tolerate them well. They would cry when we put them on, and so I thought I was hurting them, which made me take them off and try again and again, why made them cry more, etc. We finally got through it, though, and now they wear them without comlaint. Lauren tends to wiggle her toes to the point that her heel lifts up off the sole of the AFO and it looks awkward and uncomfortable, so I have to redo hers several times per day. got DAFO's, which I think is just the brand? It says Cascade on the buckle, if that makes a difference. We brought our PT with us to the fitting appointment. If Noah has a PT and that person has an opinion about AFO's, definitely consider asking them to come along with you to the appt. The main PITA (aside from the cost of them!) is that it makes it harder to get them out of, say, a high chair at a restaurant, or out of the stroller with a snack tray. The top of the AFO stop just below their knees, and it catches on things when I try to lift them out of the stroller or restaurant high chair. kids don't walk, so I can't help with on shoes. you'll get through it. Noah will get through it. And FWIW, ours definitely took less than 2 weeks to come in. The best part was getting to pick out the colors! I think I have a picture of them here somewhere, which I will find for you right now because I'm such an attention whore: Caleb has AFOs for about a year now. He started wearing them at least 1/2 day starting in January. (His stop just above the ankle). At first, they bothered him. The people who made them, made them just a little too big (room to grow), which would've been fine, except he's not walking yet and the velcro gets stuck on the carpet, other things and it was annoying. He finally fit right in them about Jan., so we started wearing them more and more. Still not walking yet sigh. But I think the the "correct" positioning of the AFO and the support it gives, balanced with the input of bare feet is a good thing. had to buy a size bigger shoe (Target) and tear out the insides in order to fit the AFO in it. Noah just turned two so I am hoping the AFO's and continuing with PT will get him going. He is making progress on pulling up on furniture which is great. He actually pulled up in his crib tonight on his own when I went to give him a good night kiss that was a first!!! again thanks for the information I will let everyone know how it goes. We went yesterday to get fit for Noah's AFO's and the guy was actually surprised that we hadn't come in before. He mentioned that most kids with low tone get fit with braces called SMA's when they are around 13 months and aren't walking yet. I hadn't heard this before and it was only about 2 months ago when our PT suggested that we see an orthopedic dr. The AFO's will actually go up on his calf but I know they also do sometimes fit them for AFO's but then cut them down to make shoe inserts. Not sure if that helps or not.
