I think it varies per child but they were a godsend for my older DD. My dad bought her a pair of squeaky sandals shortly after she turned 2. Little did we know that she would develop juvenile arthritis just a few months later. She was in so much pain that she refused to walk. Her squeaky sandals were the only thing that got her moving. She adored them. I clearly remember when a friend asked me if the sound annoyed me. Hearing those squeaks was like music to my ear (and yes, she's doing much better in treatment). Anyway. we do love them here. I would always put them on her when we went to crowded places like the state fair or the zoo. It really helps you keep track of your LO. It's as much for you as it is for them! I just got DS his first pair. He loves to stomp his feet when he has them on. SO's aunt sent LO a pair from New Zealand for her birtday, she likes to hold our fingers to walk around and make them squeek but I don't think they've made too much difference in her wanting to walk unassisted, she took three or four completely unassisted steps on christmas day(no squeeky shoes) and she looks as if she is about to take off any day now but until then she will rather crawl over to someone and grab their finger than walk on her own. I think I will try her squeeky shoes out again, just in case. The old advice to give stiff, sportive shoes can actually hinder their development as walkers. I know my DN always had adorable shoes, but had a hard time learning to walk; I think it was because his shoes were so stiff and he was always tripping over his own feet. Anyway, DS doesn't walk outside very often around here b/c of the snow, so the soft Robeez are all he usually needs. We did the same thing with ODS. I think the desire to walk is strong enough that most kids don't need squeeky shoes. PP's story about her DD's arthritis seems like the exception where they could be really useful.
