February 7 through 14 is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. Brooklyn, affectionately known as Brookie Cookie, was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Andrews was sent to Children's Hospital Boston to deliver her, so that Brooklyn could receive the first of three life saving, open heart surgeries after delivery. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is when parts of the left side of the heart do not develop completely, Andrews said. Brooklyn died in her sleep 10 days after coming home from Boston. "I had checked on her at 4:30 and she was fine," Andrews said through tears. "At 6:45, when we all got up, she was gone. It was the worst day of my life. Nothing I would ever want anyone to ever have to go through. I still don't understand why more couldn't be done to fix her condition. More research needs to be done." Since then, Andrews has been on a mission to help raise awareness and money for congenital heart defect research. She manages two Facebook pages and spends a considerable amount of time networking globally with parents who have children with CHD. Newborn pulse oximetry screening measures the level of oxygen in the blood and is an inexpensive test to conduct, Andrews said. "It's a test that has been recommended at the federal level," she said. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recommended the test be included in state programs. In October 2010, the Department HHS Advisory Committee on Heritable Diseases in Newborns and Children made a recommendation to add CHD to the uniform screening panel. As of right now, the initiative is moving forward on a state by state basis. Andrews discovered her daughter's heart conditions before birth, during Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week last year. Since then, she has met scores of other parents who did not find out about their child's defect until after delivery. Some of them were sent home, and their babies consequently died. "The bill I want introduced in Vermont is Brooklyn's Law," she said. "Basically, there are 35 different kinds of heart defects. Most of which could be detected with a simple pulse oximetry test before being sent home with an undetected heart defect." There are three states where this has been made a law: Indiana, New Jersey and Maryland. Andrews is urging Vermonters to write letters to their legislators, or call them, to advocate for this mandatory screening. "I don't want to just sit on this and grieve the rest of my life," Andrews said. "I want to do something. I want Brooklyn's life to make a difference. I want there to be a legacy for her. Brooklyn has already made an impact on a lot of people. "It helps me feel like she didn't die in vain, like there is something good that can come from all of this."
