A look back at the top 10 local sports stories of the year: 1. Jason Collins In a bold and courageous move, the Harvard Westlake graduate and 12 year professional basketball player revealed his sexual orientation in April, a decision that was highlighted in the May 6 issue of Sports Illustrated, with the story opening line: a 34 year old NBA center. I black. And I gay. the first openly gay athlete to compete in a major American team sport, was overwhelmed by the support over his choice to make the news public, including a phone call from president Barack Obama. Collins, who played for the Washington Wizards, remains unsigned by any NBA team. Robbie Rogers, who revealed his homosexuality in February, became the first openly gay man to compete in a North American professional sports league when he competed May 26 for the Galaxy against Seattle. 2. Ryan Braun After winning an appeal to overturn a potential 50 game suspension for suspected violation of Major League Baseball Joint Drug Treatment and Prevention Program after testing positive for elevated testosterone levels, the Granada Hills graduate and 2011 National League MVP for the Milwaukee Brewers finally agreed in July to a 65 game suspension that prevented him from playing for the remainder of the season. Braun was suspended 50 games because of his connection to the Biogenesis scandal and an additional 15 for his criticism that the collection of urine samples did not follow protocol during his original grievance stemming from the apparent positive test in October 2011. 3. Sarah Baxter shines The Simi Valley standout continued to build on her legacy as one of the country most decorated prep distance runners, capturing her third consecutive state 3,200 meter title in June, which came after running the No. 2 time in the country of 10 minutes, 6.74 seconds at the Ventura County Championships in April. Baxter became only the third female runner in California to win four state cross country titles, leading Simi Valley to its first Division II team championship and ending the seven year reign of Saugus. In pursuit of a third consecutive Nike Cross Nationals title, Baxter placed third in her final prep cross country race following a thrilling stretch run against Washington Alexa Efraimson and Colorado Elise Cranny. 4. Jonathan Martin The Harvard Westlake graduate and Miami Dolphins offensive lineman left the team on Oct. 28 following a cafeteria incident involving several teammates, seeking treatment for undisclosed mental health issues. Martin, who has since been placed on the Dolphins non football injury list, then revealed that he had been the subject of bullying from former teammate Richie Incognito, allegations that garnered league wide reaction and resulted in Incognito suspension. Martin has since met twice with independent arbitrator Ted Wells as part of an ongoing investigation. 5. Here We Provide So Many Kind Of Nike Roshe Run Woven Women New Green White,Nike Roshe Run Energy Blue Green Quilted Your 7 year old nowWhat's the best way to react when your child announces she wants to quit ongoing lessons or a team? This is a common reaction for young kids who have spent some time in a discipline like piano or dance; a group such as a choir, Brownies, or Cub scouts; or a sport. Kids have different reasons for wanting to stop. They may simply not like what they're doing. It might be too difficult. It may take too much time away from playing. They may have a conflict with the instructor or another student or teammate. Should we push our child to stick with music lessons? Should I keep my child in gymnastics class if he says he wants to stop? Nose picking: Why it happens and what to do about it Isn't my child better off getting chicken pox than getting the vaccine? Nail biting: Why it happens and what to do about it Look at your child's overall schedule. If she's involved in something every day after school, this "second shift" of being on good behavior and told what to do may simply be too much. Rest assured you're not rearing a quitter if you give in. Under age 8 or 9, children don't really have a sense of what they'll like until they try it out. Some parents make kids wait until the end of a session or season, while others let it drop rather than force an unwilling participant. Either scenario is okay. Consider getting the input of the instructor or leader. Try to evaluate whether your child wants to quit impulsively, because of a minor glitch like an argument with a friend, or whether the desire runs deeper. Your life nowYou may have your child take a multivitamin every morning, but do you take one? Many women are lacking in certain nutrients, notably folate, calcium, and iron. So often, we monitor our nutrition and swallow vitamins during pregnancy, only to let the habit lapse as the subsequent years roll by. If energy is an issue, or you just want to be sure you're at the top of your game, have a physical exam that includes a blood workup. You only need this every few years, but if you haven't had one for a while, you may be due. This Internet site provides information of a general nature and is designed for educational purposes only. Nike Roshe Run Woven Women New Green White I been on the hunt for a good pair of every day shoes since, well, last fall, to be honest. Just when I was giving up, my sister gave me a hand me down pair that she wasn wearing. (Thank goodness for sisters who have the same size feet as you!) But I wore that pair clean out and this year, I found myself in the same predicament. And since I couldn get away with my jeans and flip flops much longer, I knew I needed to find something fast. When it comes to shoes I wear every day, I really need something supportive. And while I know that statement makes me sound a little bit more grandmotherly than I like it to, four kids later and my feet just aren what they used to be. It never fails that by the end of the day my feet and heels get really sore and tired. So I always on the lookout for shoes that are both cute and stylish, but also comfortable and supportive. When an opportunity popped up in my inbox to test out a pair of Dr. Scholl shoes, I be honest, my first thought was those kind of old lady shoes? You know, a good sturdy shoe. Well, think again, these aren your grandmother shoes. Dr. Scholl new looks for fall include everything from a sassy ankle boot to a sweet ballet flat, or fun and casual sneakers. So now you get shoes in great styles and colors plus Dr. Scholl lives up to its reputation of comfortable, supportive and well made shoes. The Jennie sneaker which was my favorite pick for every day wear, is fun and cute, but has surprisingly comfortable support for a flat soled shoe. I been wearing them all day, every day for about a week and I have no complaints (or aches and pains) at the end of the day. The shoes have something called a FreeStep construction which helps your foot strike naturally when you walk. And the neoprene stretch collar around the inside of the shoe makes them super comfortable. Plus, they pink and orange! One lucky BabyCenter Blog reader is going to win a pair of Dr. Scholl Jennie sneaker in the size and color of their choosing!
