This means you don't have to go back for shoes or shirt or belt, saving a lot of shopping time. I know it can sometimes seem like a lot to pay out at one time. Consider if you had to make separate trips for everything, and to separate stores, this also means a lot of time, each time, how much all this adds up to. It also means later, when you are getting ready for something, that you have everything. Magazines are okay for an idea. They show an entire ensemble the right jacket, the right shoes, the right shirt. You don't have to buy what is advertised, some clothes are hundreds of dollars. Go for the look. There are usually knock offs and copies for a whole lot less in KMart, Target, Dillards and Macys. If you have someone you trust, take them with you shopping. A second opinion doesn't cost anything and could save a lot of stupid purchases. And save tags and receipts. Some things that looked great in the store don't come off the same way once you are home. Just about every store will take things back, tags help, but a receipt is demanded. They love to give store credit rather than a refund, and you don't have to use the credit immediately. If a holiday is coming up, that could be a break for your finances. Your age determines a lot of fashion. Unless you are still in school, most T shirts should be relegated to weekends washing the car or taking out the trash. This is especially true of funny shirts, worn shirts and team shirts. Again, the guys may love 'em but are you going for the guys? Most women don't want to see a lot of jewelry on a man. For one, if you are buying yourself a lot of jewelry, she figures it will cut into what you could be buying her. Gold chains and big rings worked in the 70s when guys were at the Disco, it's just pathetic now, particularly on older men. Makes them look like they are re living their youth. And unless you ARE a rodeo champion, keep the belt buckles to a minimum. Did you ever see James Bond's belt buckle? Or even Indiana Jones? See what I mean? Jeans are a constant hassle. Considering they are easy care, the look is what you are really going for. Most jeans are NOT the right length for most people, men or women. Guys, high water jeans are dumb. Women hate them. They make you look stupid. Hey, I don't make the rules, it's the look. Doesn't matter if they are bell bottoms or slim or boot cut don't buy too short no matter how well they hug your waist, or too long and think you'll walk off the extra length (this is fallout fashion from jr high and high school get over it). That's what boys do. You are now men. If you don't have a mom or a galfriend to hem your jeans, just about every dry cleaners either does this or they have someone who does. Be sure to wash your jeans at least four times before getting them hemmed. Hem a new pair of jeans and you will have a fine pair of shorts in the summer, I guarantee you they will shrink enough to be useless later. If the pants you try on fit beautifully at the top but aren't the right length DON'T BUY IT! I don't care if it's one dollar. Don't do it. You are wasting your time, effort and money. There will always be another pair of jeans, sometimes you just have to search for them. And no matter what fashion magazines or television shows have people with tears and holes in their jeans, in real life it means you can't afford to keep your pants looking nice and you are too cheap to get new ones. The Media is not real life, no matter who calls themselves a "Reality" show. You are not on TV, this is real life. Belts? Low key is the way to go. Black, brown or navy blue are good, they go with everything. Trust me, women are not studying your belt. The buckle? Something plain, yet stylish . . . gold tone or silver works well with everything. Large buckles and trendy buckles like truck logos or rock bands look hick. They work down South or out West or at the races or rodeo, is that what you want to project? They also have been known to scratch and catch on things. Awkward, especially getting close to a woman. If you play guitar, it can be deadly on a beautiful finish. You can't just have one look . . . well, you can but it's not recommended. There is business wear, corporate wear, corporate casual, evening wear, weekend wear, after 5 wear, day wear, party wear. Your look has to be tailored for the occasion. Buying men's magazines does not make you gay. Being well dressed is for the women, not the men. Much as I hate day time soap operas, watch a few with the sound off and look at what they are wearing, they are usually pretty trendy. There are also classic looks that never go out of style: a tweed jacket, a leather coat, a nice hat. Make sure your clothes fit. People tend to buy what's on sale instead of what fits . . . shirts too tight, pants too loose. A lot of stores offer tailoring for pants lengths and jacket sleeve lengths. Take advantage of this! On Monday, September 8, 2014, the Baltimore Ravens football team released their running back, Ray Rice, from his contract not long after TMZ published on their website a video that showed running back Ray Rice hitting and knocking out in an Atlantic City hotel elevator on February 15, 2014, his fianc at the time, Janay Palmer, who is now his wife. The National Football League Commission Roger Goodell suspended Rice indefinitely. Another video of the incident that was published months ago came from a camera that only showed the couple outside the elevator. When the elevators door opened, Rice dragged Ms. Palmer motionless body out of the elevator. In March, 2014, Rice was charged with felony assault, but Janay Palmer Rice would not testify against her husband. The court decision was court supervised counseling. Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Rice from two games. This new video prompted criticism of the Ravens and Goodell handling of the incident previously. The Ravens had not, at the time of the first video, disciplined Rice publically. Apparently, unsportsmanlike behavior is nothing new to the League and Goodell, who has the freedom to choose penalties. In the past, according to a New York Times article by Ken Belson, there have been incidents involving bullying, drunkenness, weapons, drugs, and steroid use. This information is very disturbing, but what troubles me the most is what the Ravens allegedly said on Twitter about Ms. Janay Rice alleged comments about regretting the role she played in the incident in the elevator. In addition to the domestic violence, here are some things that are really disturbing me about this entire event. Let pretend for a moment that she did say these words. Is it possible, we wonder, that such a huge and physically powerful man had no choice but to punch and render motionless a far less physically able woman? So, just how big does Ms. Rice think her part in this abuse could be? And, oh, how come the scene outside the elevator where Rice was dragging body of his then fianc Ms. Rice did not ignite outrage? And, another oh, how come Rice was only given a two game suspension? And a bigger oh, what about the Ravens defending Rice after the first video and actually rallying around him during training? Just how is a person supposed to speak out believe domestic violence when major organizations downplay it? Or when the media does not collectively speak out either? When the world seems to conspire against the truth, then it is easier for victims of both sexes to doubt and minimize their abuse than to acknowledge it and protect themselves. Ray Rice and his willing deniers make me think of one of my favorite children books, Emperor New Clothes. No one wants to speak out and say, Emperor doesn have any clothes on. Everyone looks the other way simply doesn it any more. You can see what is not allowed to be thought. So, here are my tips for victims of domestic violence. It the least I can offer. These tips are based on findings and tested solutions from the thousands of women I researched for my book, Relationships. Don be afraid to be Women are often too accepting of unacceptable behavior in a partner. The women often get trapped into the false logic of: am not perfect. Who am I to criticize or reject someone? Don think in terms of rejection. Think in terms of whether your partner treatment of you is respectful. 2. Get a safety plan now. Consult your local women organization to learn what to do in case you need to leave an abusive relationship. For example, you will learn to do things such as: Open a bank account do not sign up for emails Open a safety deposit box to keep credit cards, passport, cash, and copies of documents Learn the location of safe houses Know whom to call in an emergency 3. Objectify your feelings to get in touch with them. For example, pretend that your incident with your partner were the headlines in your local paper on the electronic headlines at Times Square in New York City! Would you want the words to read: (Your name) allows partner to shove and punch again. Or, imagine an email or social media posting with the same words going out to all your contacts. 4. Know your first thoughts and feelings about your partner with each incident and afterward. Usually, these spontaneous reactions tell you a lot about you! For example, the women in my study often thought and felt: no, not again. day I going to leave him. says he sorry, but he doesn mean it. Pay attention to these cues about your relationship. Write them down and then read them. 5. Volunteer for a charity. You will feel valued, you will learn skills, and you will make connections that could lead to a friendship or even a job or safe place! Many partners of victims don like the other person to work outside the home take on more work responsibilities. You don have to lie about volunteering. 6. Finally, ask yourself these questions: Do I want to set a bad example for my children? Do I want to be part of these statistics: 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime.
