You never gain more than 400 feet per climb, but you do this several times over no matter where you start. About halfway through the trail, there is a picnic table/shelter/firepit/outhouse. It's very, very informal (read: no TP!), but it's there if you need it. You'll hike right by the lake and over several large rock paths that are basically waterfalls waiting for rain. My only complaint is that, at least when we went, the trail starting at Defeated isn't very well marked. Blue dots have been spray painted on cedar and other loose bark trees. I ended up knocking on a locals door and bumming a ride back to the marina. A smarter thing to have done would be to park at the end of the trail that way bumming a ride back would be easy with all the boats coming out. This was a pretty nice hike. We had a diverse group of hikers, there was a 59 year old, a five year old and two in between. The two in between are experienced hikers, the other two were not. Everyone kept up suprisingly well, though we did move at a little slower pace. We parked a car at the overlook so we could hike it one way. We started at the marina end. The first mile and a half can be rough with respect to the terrain, lots of places that you have to choose your steps carefully. that I have hiked were not as bad as this. Outside of that there are ups and downs, but not nearly as dramatic. A couple of great views, but I have definitly seen better. The backcountry campsite sits at about the 3 mile mark, give or take. my only real complaint about the trail is that about 1 mile after the campsite the trail is very poorly marked and with the fall leaves covering the entire ground, the trail itself is non existant. Thank goodness for topo maps or I would be camping there tonight instead of writing this now. All in all, decent trail but the trail must be marked much, much better in order to keep people from becoming another statistic about lost hikers. Good trail. There aren't as many views as you'd expect for a trail with the altitude fluctuations.
