White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel stepped down today after holding the position for twenty months, leaving to run for Mayor of Chicago. Political advisor Peter 'Pete' Rouse is named interim Chief of Staff by US President Barack Obama. In a White House ceremony held earlier today, Obama called the departure "the least suspenseful announcement of all time," jokingly referencing the lack of secrecy surrounding the departure. "We are all very excited for Rahm as he takes on a new challenge for which he is extraordinarily well qualified," said the president. Obama appointed political consultant and senior advisor Pete Rouse as interim chief, calling Rouse "a skillful problem solver" and a "wise, skillful and long time counselor." Emanuel, aged 50, was once a congressman from Chicago, Illinois, while Rouse, 64, was known as the "101st senator" during his time as an aide to former US Senator and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D South Dakota). Obama said the two "have slightly different styles," Emanuel being known as a tough negotiator while Rouse is noted as a lower profile problem solver. At today's event, Emanuel praised Rouse, saying he "commands the respect of everyone in this building." In April, Emanuel said he had wanted to become mayor of his birthplace for a long time, but wouldn't run until current mayor Richard M. Daley chose not to seek re election, which the mayor announced on September 7. During the ceremony, which was held in the White House's East Room, Emanuel did not expressly mention his intent to run for mayor, but said he is "energized by the prospect of new challenges." We all understand the importance of planning, but the extent and depth, to which we plan, is not the same. We would be surprised that Japanese spend as high as 40% of their time on an average on planning. But, unfortunately, this perception of benefit is related to our understanding of what is planning. Planning is whatever we can do to facilitate the physical execution. The indicator of a good planning is that : 1. physical execution goes smoothly, 2. the surprises are minimum and 3. surprises are handled smoothly with 4. alternatives already thought of. The planning encompasses at the highest level overall planning to set the direction to achieve the objective and at lowest level of ensuring all required inputs of information, materials, manpower and other resources needed for the days activity so that the days activity is performed as planned. The planning also ensures that any change of requirements is detected well in advance to help plan alternative. There is a normal overpowering human tendency to be associated with physical activity rather than thinking activity as Physical activity gives comfort and illusion of achievement. People therefore consciously resist planning to the depth needed. Another factor which comes very much in the way is that most of the time people see the plans fail. It may surprise that if WE make a statement that plan never fails. Plans are made based on the knowledge available at the time of making it. A good plan is never static. It is constantly updated by looking for inputs of changes well ahead of time. Most of the well executed projects are backed by excellent planning efforts. Whether that's by design, or due to market forces beyond Apple's control, I can't say for sure. I can't think of another company that cares as much about how its products are designed and built or one that knows how to maximize a supply chain as skillfully so something tells me it's no accident that this tablet isn't selling for $200. It doesn't feel like Apple is racing to some lowest price bottom rather it seems to be trying to raise the floor. From Walt Mossberg at The Wall Street Journal: So why did Apple, whose large iPad and new Macs boast extremely high screen resolution, choose a lower resolution for the Mini? The company did so because it says there are only two resolutions that allow its tablet apps to run unmodified. One is the extremely high resolution on the current large iPad, which would have boosted the cost and lowered the battery life of the Mini. The other, the one Apple chose for the Mini, is the same resolution on iPad models consumers have snapped up: the original iPad and the iPad 2, which is still on the market at $399. This makes sense, but it means that, unlike its closest competitors, the Mini can't play video in high definition. Apple insists the device does better than standard definition, if you are obtaining the video from its iTunes service, since iTunes scales the video for the device, so it will render somewhere between standard definition and HD. It says some other services will do the same. But the lack of true HD gives the Nexus and Fire HD an advantage for video fans. In my tests, video looked just fine, but not as good as on the regular iPad. By pricing the Mini so high, Apple allows the $200 class of seven inch Android tablets and readers to live (Google Nexus, Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD). Those tablets also, by the way, have high definition screens (1,280 by 800 pixels), which the Mini doesn't. But the iPad Mini is a far classier, more attractive, thinner machine. It has two cameras instead of one. Its fit and finish are far more refined. And above all, it offers that colossal app catalog, which Android tablet owners can only dream about. In retrospect, it's not the least bit startling that Apple chose not to take on the $199 7 inchers directly. They're all clad in plastic cases, and their makers price them at the break even point or maybe even a bit below it in hopes of turning a profit on later sales of books, videos, apps and other content. Apple, by contrast, has an aversion to plastic; nearly every gadget it makes has a unibody aluminum shell. It also prefers to make an up front profit on its hardware, which is presumably more doable at $329 than at $199. This isn't just an Apple tablet made to a budget. This isn't just a shrunken down iPad. This is, in many ways, Apple's best tablet yet, an incredibly thin, remarkably light, obviously well constructed device that offers phenomenal battery life. No, the performance doesn't match Apple's latest and yes, that display is a little lacking in resolution, but nothing else here will leave you wanting. At $329, this has a lot to offer over even Apple's more expensive tablets. Those comparing this to the Kindle Fire HD will have a hard time, as that's a tablet manufactured to a fixed cost and designed to sell you content. This is very much more. Similarly, the hardware here is much nicer than the Nexus 7 and it offers access to the comprehensively more tablet friendly App Store, but whether that's worth the extra cost depends entirely on the size of your budget and your proclivity toward Android. But oh, that screen. It's not bad, not at all, but it's not Retina Display. It's not even as high res as other 7 inch tablets. If you're an obsessive over crisp text, you'll notice the fuzziness. If you're comparing the Mini to a laptop, you won't. I wanted that display to be as good as the one on the iPhone 5, iPod Touch, and Retina iPad. It isn't, not now. It mars the product for me, because otherwise, the screen size and its aspect ratio is perfect for handling comics, magazines, and reading apps. If you were on the fence about the iPad mini, do these reviews change your mind? I use it for light bedtime reading. On the surface (pun intended), the iPad Mini $329 price point seems like a dumb move. Inferior screen and costs $130 more than its competitors. Kind of like bringing a knife to a gunfight. But the reality is parents who couldn afford to buy little Johnny or Susie a $500 iPad, are going to shell out in droves for the iPad Mini. Not saying it right. I saying that just the way it is. Android tablets aren even on the radar of the normals. Only geeks who follow tech know and care about them. The Surface tablet is a business laptop replacement masquerading as a consumer device. Microsoft commercials for the Surface are brilliant. Market to the consumers because they drive a lot of IT departments these days. Not the other way around. It a Bring Your Own Device To Work sort of world now and Microsoft knows it. The Engadget review says that it isn a iPad, then explains that it is, essentially, just a smaller iPad. Or, probably more accurately, a larger iPod. I liked my iPad 2 and used it frequently for lots of things (other than reading books). It was stolen and I hadn replaced it because I was waiting for the unveiling of the iPad mini. When I saw the underwhelming nature of the mini, I actually ordered a Nexus 7. (My investment in iOS apps was minimal; mostly free apps or paid content via Amazon Prime, which isn locked to iOS). I figure for $200 I can browse the web, do light market research, and handle email and videos just fine and I spent $130 less. Had the iPad mini used an HD ratio or been slightly cheaper, or if I would have had more of a paid investment in iOS apps I probably would have stayed, but at the cost it doesn do anything more than the cheaper Nexus. User experience on iOS isn $130 (nearly 150% of cost) better than user experience on Android, in my opinion. I, like most users, don need a billion apps. I just need my regular 7 15 that I use, which work well on just about any OS at any price point. I gave the mini a lot of consideration before deciding to opt for the full size iPad 3rd generation. The Apple site says it is on the truck for delivery today! I am excited, as I plan to use it in my photography business for wirelessly doing quick photo touch up, proof display for print, and cash register. I do this all now with a 11 Toshiba Win7 netbook and it is a lot of work to manage it. I just thought the extra real estate if the bigger iPad, and retina display, were better for me and my application for the tool.
