Bike fitting is the most important thing when buying a bicycle. No reputable store will sell you a bike without properly fitting it to you. However, how good is store's fitting? What should we be looking for in a fit? Can we do it ourselves? I will try to answer these questions in this article. Bicycle fit is important for road and mountain bikes, but on the mountain bike the movements around the saddle are so big that most of the riders do not need a meticulous fit as long as the bike is the right size for the rider. If you find yourself between sizes when buying a mountain bike, always go for the smaller size. Smaller bike will be easier to handle and its shorter wheel base will provide much better maneuverability. However, on the road bike, the perfect fit is a necessity that cannot be sacrificed. For professional riders the primary purpose of the fit is to maximize their power; however for recreational riders the prime goals should be comfort and prevention of injuries. The processBike fitting must be done when you are wearing your cycling gear including the shoes with the clipless pedals. If you don't have shoes and pedals yet, you will have to repeat some of the fitting steps again after purchasing the shoes. If you do have your shoes make sure the cleats are properly adjusted before starting the bike fit. Cleat Shoe adjustmentHopefully by now, you made the choice between using the mountain or the road shoes. Whatever shoes you have chosen you will still need to adjust your cleat position. There are two main adjustments: Fore/Aft and Angular. The goal of the Fore/Aft adjustment is to position the cleat so the balls of your feet rest over the centers of the pedals. This is done by trial and error but can be quickly achieved. The purpose of the Angular adjustment is to place your foot in its natural position on the pedals. You can use a regular shoe on one leg and compare it to your clipless shoe position on the other leg. The shoe with the cleat should be at the same angle as the regular shoes without the cleats. Choosing bike sizeRoad bike fit starts with finding the right bike size for you. The sales person will try to reach to your private parts with a measuring tape in attempt to measure your inseam. There is a quicker and more effective way to do it. Grab a bike that looks the right size for you. Stand over it and lift it up by the handlebar and the saddle until it can go no further (by now it's stuck in your groin). Look at the wheels; you want to see them lifted 2 from the ground equally on both sides. If you have more then 2 try a bigger bike, if you have less then 2 you need a smaller bike. Yes, it took 30 seconds and no one touched your private parts. If the bike is not the right size for you the salesman will tell you so. Seat heightThe next step is to adjust the seat height. In order to do, so the bike should be placed in a stationary trainer and you should be comfortably seated in the saddle reaching to the handlebar. Slowly start pedaling, and then stop when one leg is at the bottom of the stroke. Your hip shin angle should be about 25. If it's not, adjust the seat height and try it again until you reach the proper hip shin angle. Knee over the pedal axleThe next step is to adjust your Fore/Aft saddle position. When placing your legs in 3 and 9 o'clock position you want your 3 o'clock knee to be right over the pedal axle. If it doesn't, move your seat forward or aft until you reach this point. Important! Moving the seat forward and rearward will change the seat height as seatpost is slanted. You must check that your seat height was not significantly affected by this step. If it did, you need to readjust your seat height and repeat this step until both conditions are satisfied. Handlebar reach and heightThe bike comes with a stem provided by the factory. Stem's length determines how far you need to stretch to reach the handlebar and stem's angle defines the height of the handle bar. A good starting point is to have the handlebar and the saddle at the same height. More flexible riders will prefer lower handlebar positions. However, if you are in the beginning of your riding adventure, you might want to have it higher to prevent strain on the back and neck muscles. The heights and the reach of the handlebar can be adjusted by switching to a different stem. The store should offer you that at no charge. You should be seating comfortably and reaching the handlebar with ease when your arms almost stretched out. In order to verify that you are sitting in the proper position, place your hands on the brake hoods and position the crank arms 3 and 9 o'clock. Try taking your hands off the hoods without moving your torso. If it's a strain to hold your torso in that same position, that's an indication that your stem is too long or too low. Another rule of thumb is that when looking down at your front wheel, your handlebar should obscure the front wheel hub. Now you are ready to take your first ride and the real fitting begins. Everything we did until now is just a starting point. No two riders are alike; therefore every rider will have to fine tune his bike to reach the optimal fit for him. That's why it's so important to understand the fit process and be able to do it yourself. The perfect fit will give you a comfortable ride that you can sustain for several hours without knee pain, joint pain, back pain, or any other type of pain. Of course muscle pain is fine when training but if the pain is persistent something is wrong with your fit. Burning or numbness sensations of any kind indicate a fit problem. Do not wait take care of it right away. Remember, only you know what's good for your body. Important tipsMake only one small adjustment each time. One or two millimeters can make a huge difference. Make markings of original positions before moving something, so if it doesn't work you can go back. Seat angle is another adjustment that you might want to do after few rides. The recommended starting point is completely horizontal. I ride with my saddle when the nose is slightly down by 3. Handlebar width should be same width of your shoulders. If it deviates by much you need a different handlebar. If you have small hands you might need a special handlebar designed for shallow reach. The brake levers and shifters can be equipped with shims to allow for shallower reach. Your saddle should not give you any numbness. If it does, switch to different saddle. Women might require additional changes. At the end if nothing works, there are special places that specialize in professional bicycle fit. They usually charge about $150 but they guarantee success. If it doesn't work right away don't get desperate it took me about 3 months to reach the perfect position on my bike. Once you're there, mark it permanently! "Making Do" Alternatives to Flamenco Shoes for BeginnersDance shoes made for most other dance styles are often very unsuitable for flamenco worse than dancing in street shoes, in fact! Ballroom, jazz and character shoes are designed to be flexible, so you can bend your foot and point your toe. Soft, flexible shoes are absolutely useless for flamenco, and will make it much harder to master the steps. I'm often asked how to add tacks to character or Broadway shoes. I have bad news, I'm afraid. Firstly, those shoes are not rigid enough for flamenco. Secondly, the soles are too thin to take tacks the points will eventually poke right through and into your foot. A shoemaker could add a thick sole, but that will probably upset the balance of the shoe. If you do decide to make do with other shoes, make sure they have a decent heel. How to Spot a Good Flamenco ShoePick up the shoe firmly by the heel and toe box, and try to twist it sideways (not too hard!). A good flamenco shoe should be rigid. Look at the heel. It should be between 3cm and 6cm (just over 1 inch to 2.5 inches). Lower is better, at least to begin with. Experienced dancers often wear a higher heel but it's purely for looks, because it makes their legs look longer. Watch flamenco videos and you'll notice that many of the best dancers choose the lower heel, because it's better for balance and control. The shape of the heel is a matter of taste, though a very narrow heel will be harder to balance on and because it gives less support to the shoe, there's more risk of you breaking the shank. Check the sole. It should be good, thick rubber, to protect the feet and to create the sound. Immediately reject anything with a wafer thin leather sole you'll end up with a bruised foot! What is the material? Flamenco shoes are usually made of leather or suede. Leather takes longer to "break in", but will look good for longer. Suede shoes come in some gorgeous colours, and are a little softer on the feet but of course, that means they will wear out sooner. Don't buy synthetic they don't breathe, nor will they mold to your foot. Now for the tacks. There should be a generous amount of them, on the tip of the toe and all over the heel (if not, you won't get a good sound). If they are overlapped, they will be less likely to fall out in use. Run your finger over them. If they are smooth, it's a sign of a good craftsman. If the shoe passes these basic tests, it's worth trying them on. Don't assume that because a shoe is "your size", that it will automatically fit! What Size Should I Buy?Dancers often buy ballroom and ballet shoes a fraction too tight, knowing they'll stretch to a perfect fit with wear. However, flamenco shoes are rigid and have less "give", so if you buy a pair that's slightly too small, they may never be comfortable. Too small shoes will affect your balance, because you don't have a secure platform to dance on if your toes are curled up. Shoes that are too big can be even worse because they can cause injuries. If your foot is able to slide around inside the shoe, you're more likely to go over your ankle or step out of the shoe while you're dancing. The movement means your foot will rub against the inside of the shoe and cause blisters. If your shoe doesn't feel like part of your foot, it's distracting, too. You want a shoe that fits snugly, with no gaps anywhere, but not so snug that it cramps your foot. Forget any advice you ever had from your mother about leaving room for your toes! Walk around. Does the fastening (elastic, buckle) keep the shoe on, even if you stride? Try dancing a little. Do they feel good? A store which understands flamenco shoes should provide some hard flooring for you to try them out, even if it's just a piece of tile. How do they sound? Sound is one of the things you may have to compromise on at first. The first time you try on a genuine Spanish flamenco shoe, you'll probably be amazed at the difference in the sound compared to a foreign copy. But in some ways, it's a good thing to have a shoe which isn't too loud when you start out it's not so embarrassing when you make a mistake! With a flamenco shoe, all you want is for the leather or suede uppers to mold to your feet so you don't get blisters. The only way to do that is to wear them.
