When people ask me what baby gear I couldn live without, there are a few things that I quick to rattle off play mat with arch overhead for when baby is small, a front carrier, and a baby backpack. While I longed to be a mom who has kids who ride along happily in the stroller, that never been my reality. But those same babies that squirm and squeal in the stroller, rarely turn down a jaunt in the backpack. I used a baby backpack to run errands, work in the yard, go for long walks, navigate crowded streets, stroll through museums, and get dinner on the table. They have been a life saver for me in so many situations. Why get a baby backpack carrier? For starters, they give you the flexibility to go places that you couldn navigate with a stroller. From perusing crowded stalls at the farmers market, hiking a rocky trail, to riding subway escalators, there are many situations when a backpack carrier gives you the room to move about more easily than a stroller would. Like my own children, many babies who don like a stroller will be happy on your back. With a better view and the close head to head contact, you enjoy a happy baby and hands free time. The downside of a backpack carrier? I admit they are a bit awkward to get on and off, especially if you by yourself. I often load the baby with the carrier on the ground, then use the open trunk of my van to load baby onto my back when someone isn around to help. And if baby falls asleep in the pack, it no easy to task to remove baby without waking him or her. When can baby ride in a backpack? Thats plenty of time to get a feel of what its like to be in the gorge without overheating. Winter is cold at the South Rim. The best strategy is to dress in layers. Bring a hat and gloves and wear pants. I've seen Vegas travelers in shorts. Don't do it. The rim's elevation is nearly twice that of Vegas' and its a complete weather change. There are three main tour operators that run bus trips from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon: Papillon Tours, Grand Canyon Coaches, and Grayline. There's also a number of smaller, niche bus tour companies out there and many are excellent. 'tweener wheel size is here to stay. Fox wasn't first to the party that honor belongs to White Brothers and X Fusion. Both models share similar construction and features: 27.5 specific 44mm fork offset34mm diameter Kashima coated uppers FIT damper 15mm thru axle 1.5 inch tapered steerer Weight: 4.4 lbs Axle to Crown A to C Height (Observed): 550mm Many all mountain and hard core trail riders opt for Fox's FLOAT forks instead of the travel adjust TALAS. Historically, FLOAT models have offered better small bump compliance, less complex internals and a lower price point than their adjustable sibling. What's more, in real world riding, many riders end up leaving their TALAS fork in maximum travel position most of the time. Another knock against all Fox forks is not getting full travel. In an attempt to mitigate this complaint, for 2013 Fox has modified their damping curve to provide a more linear stroke, with less compression 'ramp up' from mid travel to full compression. Ironically, this noticeable reduction in progression has some magazine test riders commenting that the fork blows through travel too easily. The fix for these expert riders is either adding oil to the air chamber or increasing air pressure. The latter modification reduces small bump compliance not exactly a desirable side effect for the average rider. So, will Joe Average trail rider/borderline all mountain slayer find the fork too linear? Based on my experience, probably not. And those that do can likely resolve the issue by leaving the fork in the "Trail" compression setting instead of opting for the "Descend" setting. After a dozen trail rides on this fork, including some fairly burly trails with plenty of rocks and 2 3 foot drops, I've yet to attain full fork travel. At my 165 lb. body weight, I started with air pressure of 70 lbs. After a couple benchmark rides on familiar local trails, I dropped air pressure to 65 and now to 60. With the fork set in the middle 'Trail" setting, I have not bottomed the fork at any of these pressures. Perhaps the fork would blow through all the travel in "Descend" mode, but I've hesitated to test that theory for fear of excessive brake dive. Only time and further testing will tell, but I can confidently conclude that, for the type of riding this fork is designed for, Fox got it right. This fork is superbly plush, and the 34mm stanchions are noticeably stiffer than the 32 sticks. Riding this fork back to back with a coil Rock Shox Lyrik, the Fox feels 85% as plush and 90% as stiff. Granted, a welterweight rider with middling skills isn't going to push any modern fork to it's design limits, but it serves as a testament to the plushness of the revised spring curve and the stiffness of the 34mm tubes. I would describe the action as "lively". The fork tends to work in the top 1/3 of travel at trail riding speeds. I found myself fiddling with the rebound setting quite a bit to calm things down on the rutted hardpack trails that typify my local riding areas. I settled at about 1/3 in from full fast for now, and would probably speed things up a click or two if I was riding in loam or sand. The Fox hallmark traits are present too: superb construction and premium price. The FLOAT 34mm 27.5 retails for about $990, with the travel adjust TALAS commanding a $100 upcharge. Don't expect to see discounted prices anytime soon, especially with few other comparable 27.5/650b forks on the market. So for a trail rider or all mountain type with deep pockets, this is literally and figuratively the only choice for a long travel 34mm 27.5 fork.
