When he does get his hands on the leather, he is a force, combining Ben Wallace's defense with Kendall Gill's touch and ridiculous haircut. Appears to have a tremendous work ethic, a good head on his shoulders and a disproportionately awesome soundtrack. Weaknesses: We're not sure who he's trying to fool, but all of his games were very clearly played on eight foot rims, so it'd be wise to see how he performs in workouts before any deals are made. Emotionally, it's unclear if he's ever fully recovered from the death of his best friend, who fell off the roof of a high rise while he and Shep were playing one on one. Friends say that Shep partially blames himself for the tragic fall, which, when you think about it, is sort of inevitable, since playing basketball on the roof of a high rise is among the stupidest things anyone can do. 10. Calvin Cambridge (Like Mike) NBA Equivalent: Kobe Bryant Upside: NBA GMs are the Humbert Humbert's of the sports world: When it comes to evaluating talent, the younger the better. And this kid certainly has the total package, with the uncanny ability to dunk from half court, a Kobe Bryant like drive to be like Mike and the hunger that comes from growing up in an orphanage run by an evil Crispin Glover (again, like Kobe). Also, as far as NBA entourages are concerned, they don't come much cuter than Jonathan Lipnicki. When I saw Jerry Maguire I wanted to take him home and make him hamburgers, the little rascal. Weaknesses: Because of the recently imposed age limit, teams are going to have to take a chance on him now and then wait for his 18th birthday. Also, his athletic ability stems from getting electrocuted while touching Michael Jordan's shoes. So every time he gets a new pair of shoes you're going to have to electrocute him, which sounds like it could be hard on such a little guy's heart. So, you know, a bit of an injury risk. Collegiately, Nichols was a four year letterman; his top performance came as a junior when he posted career highs in games started (all 12) and tackles (33), adding two sacks, two interception, six passes defensed, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. Signed a reserve/future contract with Green Bay, announced Jan. 3. Originally signed as a nondrafted free agent by Seattle in April, he spent the first few weeks of training camp with the Seahawks. Wholesale Air Jordan 4 Columbia 2015,Air Jordan 3 Powder Blue These Summer Games will be far different than they were the last time Athens saw them, in more ways than can be counted. There was no Olympic torch run in 1896, or Olympic oath. There were no gold medals, no drug testing and no official national teams. And not a single woman competitor. The Olympics continued as part of a religious festival that lasted from one to five days every four years. A two stade race, twice as long as the original one stade (stadion) event. The pentathlon consisted of five events: discus, javelin, jumping, running and wrestling. Pentathletes were hailed for their all around abilities and beauty. Wrote Aristotle: "Athletes in the pentathlon are most beautiful." In wrestling, an athlete won by throwing his opponent three times to the ground, landing on his hip, shoulder or back. Boxing was brutal. There were no weight classes and no set number of rounds. Opponents were chosen by drawing. Bouts ended only when someone was knocked out or gave up. Instead of gloves, boxers wrapped leather thongs (himantes) around their hands and wrists, often with knots, knobs and metal balls. Disfigurement among boxers was so common that busts of famous boxers found at Olympia showed mutilated ears and noses. There also was a two horse chariot race. The course was 12 laps around the stadium track. Horse races also were held, at six laps around the track. Because the cost of sending a chariot team was so high, it was the owner of the victorious team who received the olive wreath, not the driver. Even more brutal than boxing, it was a no holds barred boxing wrestling combination, with no boundaries. The breaking of bones, eye gouging and strangleholds were permitted. A match continued until there was a knockout or surrender. Runners wore a helmet, a shield and greaves (leg shields) weighing as much as 50 60 pounds for the 2 to 4 stade race. Athletes competed at the most sacred site of Zeus, at a grove named Altis on a flood plain at Olympia. The Olympic stadium built on the site was 643 feet long and 97 feet wide. Nearly 40,000 people could watch from the slopes surrounding the track. Also nearby were other athletic facilities, including a gymnasium, a swimming pool and a horse race track. During the Games, spectators slept on the grounds, erected tents, bought food and wares from vendors and attended religious ceremonies, poetry readings, banquets and victory celebrations. Only free men who spoke Greek could compete. Competitors came from as far as Spain to the west and the eastern shore of the Black Sea to the east. There were many, and poets wrote odes to them and city states vied for their services. Among the most famous: Boxer Eurydamas of Cyrene. When Greeks learned that he swallowed the teeth that were broken and knocked out during one match so his opponent wouldn know how much damage he had inflicted, Eurydamas became a fan favorite. Wrestler Milo of Kroton, a six time champion, born in Italy. His strength was legendary. Boxer Melankomas of Caria, born in what is now Turkey. He was famous for his conditioning and the fact he boxed defensively, wearing out his opponent while never striking a blow. Boxer, pankratiast and runner Theagenes of Thasos. Won boxing and pankration championships and numerous victories in other games as a runner. Upon his death, the citizens of Thasos erected a bronze statue to him. Crowns of olive leaves cut with a golden knife by a child "still possessing both father and mother" from a tree supposedly planted by Hercules near the Temple of Zeus at Olympia were, at first, the only prize awarded to a victor. A herald shouted the name of the winner, the name of his father and the name of his country. on, winners received far more when they returned home, or from city states bidding for their services: goods, land and money. David Young, a professor of classics at UC Santa Barbara, in 1984 estimated Olympic champions earned the equivalent of $338,000 in modern currency. Like today, athletes competed in heats to qualify for finals. A truce was in effect for the Games, sometimes for as long as three months, to allow athletes and spectators to travel to the Olympics. During the Olympics, all hostilities among Greek city states were stopped and no death penalties could be carried out. Armed individuals or military units were banned from entering the Olympic area. Females were barred from attending the Games on penalty of death, although at some times separate women Games were held. Athletes competed naked. Some of the equipment: Discus: Made of stone, iron, bronze or lead. Javelin: A man high length of wood with a sharpened end or metal point. It had a thong for a thrower fingers at its center of gravity, to increase precision and distance.
